80% of heroin users report that they started off using prescription pain relievers
Source: National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014
Prescription drug abuse has quickly become a top public health concern in Arizona. Last year, there were more than 1,000 drug-related deaths in Arizona. More than one out of three involved prescription drugs.*
As a prescriber, it’s now more important than ever to educate patients about pain management therapies, alternatives and expectations when prescribed a prescription medication. Apache County Drug-Free Alliance would like to provide you with a short four-minute video and tri-fold brochure to help educate patients about prescription narcotic medications.
We would ask that when prescribing a prescription narcotic that you play the video for each patient and share the pain management brochure with them. The video and brochure can also be downloaded below. You can also request a DVD from our coalition. In addition to the video, our coalition has many other tools to help prevent prescription drug misuse and abuse and improve patient safety and outcomes.
Those tools include:
- Checklist on how to sign up and access Arizona's Controlled Substance Prescription Monitoring Program
- Narcotic medication treatment contract
- Postcards on proper storage and disposal of medication
To minimize the risks and maximize the benefits of prescription medication, we hope that you partner with us and offer your patients the resources and tools they need to have a better understanding of their medications.
